PIANC MMX - 10-14 May 2010

Every four years, a Congress, open to all, is held in one of the member countries for the presentation and discussion of paper on subjects of current significance to waterways and maritime interests. These Congresses are particularly valuable for the exchange of knowledge and opinions for participants of all ages. The Congress is a four-day event which covers all aspects of maritime and inland waterway navigation, including recreation, environment and international development. The programme includes invited lectures, technical papers, technical visits and networking events.

The 32nd PIANC Congress will be held in the maritime city of Liverpool on the Mersey estuary in NW England UK on 10-14 May 2010. The British National Committee of PIANC are pleased to invite you join the celebration of the 125th birthday of PIANC at this important event. PIANC AGA will also take place in Liverpool on the 10th May 2010.

Liverpool is a flourishing Atlantic port in a region with a strong maritime and inland waterways heritage, but also a substantial investment in regeneration and provision of modern facilities. It has been chosen as the European City of Culture 2008, and its historic waterfront has recently been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Congress will be held in the new Conference Centre opening in 2008 on the Liverpool Mersey waterfront.

This city, the original home of The Beatles, has many cultural attractions including two contrasting 20th century cathedrals, national museums, art galleries and a concert hall with a resident international orchestra. In the surrounding region are aristocratic country houses, the Roman city of Chester to the south, the mountain region of North Wales to the west, the Lake District to the north and the Pennine hills to the east.

International visitors can fly directly to Liverpool airport from many European locations, or to Manchester International airport with a direct rail link to Liverpool. There is a wide range of hotel accommodation within walking distance of the waterfront in the compact city centre.

We look forward to welcoming you to Liverpool and Mersey MMX in May 2010.
